Latex is nothing but a term for an emulsion of polymer in water. And here are the applications where the compound gets used. Welcome to this post where you can learn further about the latex compound and its usage:
They
get used in different adhesives. Cold-seal adhesives are used for packaging
applications. Examples of latex adhesives used include brown paper or corrugated packaging, envelope
manufacture, two-part contact adhesives, and more.
#2 Packaging -
PVDC
latex is the barrier coating for food packaging in the packaging industry. It
has two prime purposes. It bounds the amount of water in a vapor state passing
through a film and keeps the food afresh. In short, it is a perfect coating for
the application. Another thing to consider is the fact that PVDC happens to be heat
sealable. Food packaging is closed via the heat seal process.
#3 Textiles -
Latex
compounds get used in textiles to increase their resilience, aging resistance, hardness,
mechanical strength, and, most importantly, abrasion resistance. They become
water-resistant and survive extensive use. A prime use of these compounds here
is back coating. It is a process to enhance stability & decrease the
material’s fraying.
#4 Electronics -
These
compounds get used in electronic applications. Note that polyurethane foam gets
impregnated with the compound. It helps conduct static electricity. So, it is a
great source for packaging an electronic component (the one that’s static electricity-sensitive).
#5 Carpets -
In
the process of manufacturing carpets, the prime criterion is the ability to
keep the carpet in proper share. It prevents the carpet from looking messy.
This particular property is called the tuft bind. It is also referred to as
tuft-pull. And with a higher tuft-pull value, the carpet quality will be
better.
When
you have traditional carpets, you know one thing, the pile may get separated
from the backing, leading to individual tufts getting exposed. This particular
feature gets evaluated in delamination strength. If it is higher, the carpet
tends to look longer.
So,
these are the areas where latex compounds usually are used.
